Glossary

The Shopify localization glossary

Every term we mention in product, docs and sales calls — defined in plain English. Bookmark it, share it with your agency, send it to your new hire.

B

Blacklist

Forbidden words in the target locale.

Terms that must never appear in a given target language — competitor brands, deprecated SKU names, banned regulatory wording. Datora rejects any output containing a blacklisted token.

QA

Bulk job

Translate thousands of items at once.

An asynchronous Datora job that ingests a CSV, a metafield set or an entire collection, fans out across providers and reports per-item progress and cost.

D

Diff history

Per-segment audit trail.

Every change to every translation, attributed to a user or AI provider, with a one-click rollback. Required for regulated industries and for serious editorial workflows.

F

Fuzzy match

Partial reuse from translation memory.

When a new source segment is similar — but not identical — to a TM entry. Datora surfaces matches with confidence scores so post-editors can accept or refine.

G

Glossary

Locked source → target term pairs.

A list of brand, product and domain-specific terms with required translations. Datora enforces glossary entries on every AI run and flags violations in QA.

H

Hreflang

Tells Google which locale to show.

An HTML link attribute that points search engines to the correct locale variant of a page. Datora generates hreflang reports so you can verify Shopify is emitting the right tags for every market.

I

ICU placeholders

Variables inside translatable strings.

Markers like {count} or {name} that must survive translation untouched. Datora preserves placeholders and warns when an LLM tries to localize them.

L

Locale

Language + region tag, e.g. de-CH.

A BCP-47 identifier combining language and optional region (de, de-AT, fr-CA, pt-BR). Shopify Markets serves the matching locale per storefront; Datora translates per locale, not per language.

LLM (Large Language Model)

AI model behind frontier translation.

GPT-class models (Gemini, Claude, GPT-5) that translate with brand-aware nuance. Datora picks the best model per locale and falls back automatically if a provider is down.

M

Metafield

Custom Shopify content field.

A typed key/value field attached to products, collections, articles or shops. Datora translates metafields natively — no theme hacks, no JSON copy/paste.

P

Post-editing (MTPE)

Human review of machine output.

Machine Translation Post-Editing: a human linguist reviews and refines AI output. Datora tracks who edited what so you can audit quality per locale and per editor.

Q

Quality Estimation (QE)

Automatic confidence score per segment.

An AI model that scores how trustworthy a translation is without a reference. Datora uses QE to route low-confidence segments to human review automatically.

QA (Quality Assurance)

Automated checks before publish.

Rules that flag glossary violations, missing tags, broken HTML, untranslated segments and more. Datora runs QA on every translation and blocks publishing on critical issues.

S

Shopify Markets

Native multi-region setup in Shopify.

Shopify's official framework for selling internationally with localized currencies, languages, domains and pricing. Datora reads and writes the same translations Shopify Markets serves to shoppers.

Segment

Smallest translatable unit.

A sentence or paragraph treated as one atomic unit of translation. Segmentation rules affect TM leverage and how fuzzy matches are scored.

T

Translation Memory (TM)

Reusable database of past translations.

A bilingual database that stores every approved translation segment so identical or fuzzy matches can be reused. Cuts costs, enforces consistency and accelerates new product launches across stores.

Theme translation

Translating storefront UI strings.

Static labels in your Shopify theme — buttons, headers, cart strings. Datora pulls all theme keys, translates them and writes back without breaking Liquid syntax.

W

Webhook

Push event from Shopify to Datora.

A callback Shopify sends when a product, collection or theme changes. Datora subscribes to the relevant topics so new content is queued for translation in seconds.
